Our Big Adventure for 2012 will be a two week recce road trip around Turkey visiting some of the ancient wonders & historical sites from myths, legends & fables. This is a recce trip so hotels and camping will be found on the way. We can do fly/drive or tagalong for those who want to use their own vehicle. There is already a confirmed booking for this trip so there will be no change of date or cancellation.
Our rough itinerary is as follows
|
|
Saturday 14th | Meet and Greet day in Veliko Turnovo. We can organize camping or hotel, whichever you prefer. | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
| Sunday 15th | We drive over the central Balkans to Turkey. With luck as it is Sunday the border should be quiet and the crossing reasonably fast. We end the day in Istanbul, Gateway to the East. We have stayed here before so know a nice Hotel close to the historical centre. We will need to book early as the hotel is busy in the holiday season and may be full if left too late. | ||
| Monday 16th | A day exploring this amazing mix of east and west. A day is not enough this city will make you want to come back time and time again. | ||
| Tuesday 17th | It is across the Bosphorus and into Asia. We head for Cappadocia stopping for the night somewhere south of Ankara. | ||
| Wednesday 18th | We drive into the Cappadocia region for two days of exploring this strange and beautiful landscape with its fairy chimneys and underground cities. | ||
| Thursday 19th | Cappadocia. | ||
| Friday 20th | A last look at Cappadocia and maybe an early morning Balloon ride. Then off on our travels heading towards the coast and Kas. | ||
| Saturday 21st | Drive to Kas | ||
| Sunday 22nd | A boat trip for the day to visit the island of Kekova with its sunken city. Then in the evening drive along the coast to Dalyan. | ||
| Monday 23rd | Visit some of the tombs carved in to the cliff face along the Dalyan river then on to Pamukkale for the night. | ||
| Tuesday 24th | Pamukkale with its incredible hot springs and the Byzantine city of Hierapolis. This world heritage site will be a highlight of your adventure. With so much to see we move on in the evening to Ephesus. | ||
| Wednesday 25th | Ephesus - there is so much history here it's hard to know where to start. Formerly a Greek city and also a Roman city, it was the site of one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, second largest city only to Rome with a population of 250,000 in the first century BC. A day here will hardly be enough to see such a place as this. | ||
| Thursday 26th | we move on to Troy, a place of legend! This site is quite small compared to some of the other sites you have visited on your journey through Turkey. But just looking out over the plain from the walls of Troy is really something special. Then on to a short Ferry crossing of the Dardanelles ending the day at Esceabat close to the ANZAC landing sites of the Gallipoli campaign in World War 1. | ||
| Friday 27th | A day of remembrance. A tour around the Battlefields of the Gallipoli peninsula is a moving experience and time to reflect. | ||
| Saturday 28th | Is the Drive back to Bulgaria and the end of your journey through the history of the ancient worlds that are now Turkey. | ||
